September’s teacher feature highlights our band teacher, Mr. McEwen.
Mr. McEwen graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Music in Education.
He is in is his fifth year teaching; his first two years of teaching were in Myrtle Beach SC, and this is his third year at Bridge Street. He also was a substitute teacher in Morgantown and here in Wheeling.
When asked about his favorite part about teaching, Mr. McEwen states,
“My favorite thing about teaching is that moment when a student finally figures out something that they have been working diligently to understand or perform. That “ah-ha” moment is always great to see. I also love seeing growth over time. The difference between a 5th grade band student and an 8th grade band student is huge.”
Mr. McEwen was also asked about the importance of music education and what it means to him:
“Music education is everything to me, it is my life’s work. I love listening, playing, and teaching music and believe it is one of the most distinctly human experiences we have. We can learn about any culture, any time period, learn the science of every instrument and sound, and we get to make music every single day. It is a culmination of everything great about the human experience.”
In his free time, Mr. McEwen stays busy!
“In the music realm I teach percussion at St. Clairsville High School and I participate in the African Ensemble at West Liberty when I can. Outside of music I love to play video games with my friends and family. I also love to cook and travel.”
And a fun fact about Mr. McEwen?
“When I was at WVU I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Ghana, West Africa. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. If you are ever given the chance to study abroad or travel, always take the opportunity.”
Thank you for all you do Mr. Mcewen! Your students (and Bridge Street Middle School) are lucky to have you!
