BSMS’s “Walk the Bell” was a huge success thanks to the BSMS staff, community tables (Health Plan, DRS, YSS, The Village Network, NAMI, MedExpress), Wheeling Park High School’s departments, the WPHS Pep Band, and Jack’s Snacks Ice Cream Truck!
Families took advantage of community information, WPHS and BSMS courses and info, sweet treats, toured the school, chatted with teachers, and met Mrs. Broski-Birch in the cafeteria to review standardized testing info!
Thank you for a lovely evening BSMS Families!

Bridge Street Middle School teacher Heather Vickers and her students are involved in a unique project inspired by an exceptional young lady.
Melody Day suffers from cerebral palsy (CP), and her condition prevented her taking part in common playground activities. As sixth-grade student in Missouri in 2020, she imagined a more inclusive playground for students who must use a wheelchair. Her ideas led to the creation of The Melody Garden, which is “a playground for all kids – including kids who use wheelchairs, like her.”
On Thursday, Bridge Street students visited the all-inclusive J.B. Chambers Wheeling YMCA Playground to make observations about how the playground is similar and different to Melody’s playground and traditional playgrounds in Wheeling and Ohio County. Ms. Vickers said it was an important lesson for her students, and she said she was excited to see her students’ ideas on accommodating those with needs like Melody.

Mrs. Vickers and her class recently read a SCOPE article about inclusive playgrounds, and took a mini trip to the new playground at the Y. Thank you for bringing the learning to life!
